Hi guy's
Would like to know the right oil gas mix for a 1964 40 hp sea hores
Modle RDS-26S
Serial C-397061
I have been using 50:1
should i reduse with the synthatic oil's avalible,or just keep it like this or has it been wrong as i have noticed in a post about a 35 hp that 1964 was 2 diff ratio's 20?:1 and 50:1
Thanks again

Re: 1964 40 hp

50:1 is the correct mix. Just make sure you use TC-W3 outboard oil, synthetic or regular--either one will be fine. You will get less smoke and oil slick from the synthetic and it is bio-degradeable.

Well after checkng part's list, it shows part #510188 as one per assy.
Well there are two set's of point's on engine so i take it there should be two wick holder , does that sound right.
Thank's guy's.

There is only one wick and only one cam to lubricate. Putting it that way make more sense? Anyhoo, there is only one triangular boss on the armature plate for holding a wick holder. One it is.

WOW, I reckon!! I missed that one. The clip is $37 and the wick is $3.50. But they give you a free wick with a new set of points. Wierd.

Re: 1964 40 hp

Oh oh, am I really going to disagree with two of the true experts in here??
Actually, there is probably a rational explanation that explains all....

I can remember as a kid being entrusted to mix the gas for our 1964 Lark 40HP. Knowing how much boot would have been in my **** if I messed up, I was meticulous (or as meticulous as an 8 year old can be)....and can still remember (permanently burned into my hard drive :)) 1/3 pint per gallon....or 24:1....and this was right from the OMC manual.

I know that FR is not going to be giving out an incorrect mixture value....so, am I having a memory meltdown, or is there something else at play?

Re: 1964 40 hp

the wick holder part # 510188,is $26.90 from evinrude link from this site.
I know the wick comes with point set i have two.
I 'am taking FR suggestion of there being one cam and one oiler.

Now back to the origonal post 24:1 or 50:1:confused:

Re: 1964 40 hp

From the FAQ, by chinewalker:
POST-1964 JOHNSON/EVINRUDE/GALE - The official stance on 1964 and newer OMC engines is to run them 50:1 and it's a good rule of thumb to follow on the bigger motors. OMC also renegged on the late 1980s 100:1 recommendation on the smaller (4-35hp) motors, bumping them back to 50:1. I've found that the smaller (3, 4, 5, 6hp) motors from post 1964 up into the mid-1970s may appreciate a bit of extra oil as they still have some bronze sleeve bearings. I run 40:1 in my '72 4hp, as I have a pile of holed blocks, burned cranks and twisted rods that were run at 50:1.

1960-1964 JOHNSON/EVINRUDE/GALE - 18hp and up can run at 40:1, as they are mostly jeweled motors at this point. Anything smaller run it at 24:1.
Pre 1960 - any size, run it 24:1. If it's used for racing or high performance, double up the oil...
