I've got my 1964 6HP merc lower unit removed, cleaned up, new parts ready to go back in. Now the fun part. On the main drive shaft there is a small ball that is inserted in the shaft to drive the impeler in the water pump. this is now missing. any ideas?
Second question is what is the trick to reinstalling the shift shaft? I have not removed the propeller drive, as I don't have a spud wrench.
Thanks for any replies.

You will have to either find or make a new drive pin. Preferably stainless.

For the shift rod, you will have to remove the propshaft and carrier. No way to get shaft back in without it.

From the parts list which I gave you in your previous posts, see item 34, pin under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (PAGE 1). This is the one for the impeller and it is available.

To remove the cover nut, item 67 under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (PAGE 2, you can make a tool from a suitable piece of pipe with notches cut in one end to match those of the nut. On the other end drill a hole through the pipe to insert a bar for turning the wrench. Alternatively, you can use a punch to remove the old nut (LH thread) and replace it with this one:

Then with the carrier removed, you can get in to fit the cam to the shift shaft.
