Re: 1964 850 wake up

A well worn shift cable will pull but have difficulty to 'push'. The cable/wire gets 'stuck' into the groove that has been worn into the housings inner core/liner.

Once the LU in reinstalled, disconnect the shift cable, with the motor NOT running and while turning the prop with your foot, shift the linkage and check to see that the LU shifts and locks into Forward, Neutral, and Reverse. If all's well, suspect your problem is with the cable.

So Kax, what's the story bud? Did you ever figure out what the deal was?

The issue is still there when I turn the shift shaft with pliers.
Once in forward it will not shift into neutral normally.
Do they make a spline socket that fits?

I have an old Craftsman 1/4" drive set that has an 11/32" socket in it as I remember that will fit that spline.I want to say that it is a 6 point socket but cannot remember for sure.I have several socket sets but for some reason only the Craftsman 1/4" set has the right combination of features that will fit it.Ron G

Looks like I need to test the shifting while the motor is running.

You are not supposed to shift the LU into reverse without the motor running! You can do it while turning the prop without the motor running. Any resistance to shifting can cause damage to the shift components.
It's in the operator's manual.

I am working on the manual starter now....
Cleaned all parts and ready to re-assemble.
Do I lubricate the recoil spring? If so, what type of grease or oil do I use, if any? Is the lube different from the rest of the manual start assembly lube?

Well the good thing is that it is not holding the main casing together like the bolts on the other side of the block do. Aside from a bit of a leak (which may only present itself in the upper RPMs) I think that structurally you should be fine for a little test start.

I could not time the motor properly, the most advance I could get was at TDC.
Did the belt jump?

I can't seem to find it now, but I think it was on this site that I downloaded a timing wheel type thing for setting the points. I used an old rotor to make the pointer. Also, if you go to Maxrules site they have a real nice section on timing old Mercs. http://www.maxrules.com/timingindex.html

I hope that helps you. If you want to borrow my stuff to time it, I'll send it to you, you'll have to pay shipping both ways though!

Re: 1964 850 wake up

Started the motor today. It ran great. I am surprised how quiet the motor runs.
Questions though.

During a cylinder drop test 5 & 6 didn?t affect the motor as much as 1 through 4. I did get a response from 5 & 6, but not as strong as 1 through 4. Could this be from the bottom carb needing adjustment? Not a reed or seal issue?

The motor ran(low rpm) for 15 minutes on muffs. The motor did not get hot to the touch, a little warm on all cylinders. Can I assume that the new impeller is functioning correctly? Should water be coming out of the exhaust port on the drive shaft housing?
