Re: 1964 Alpex Bali Rebuild

Well today I actually made some good progress. Due to the weather being crappy, I decided to amuse the wife and brought 2 rolls of carpet, about 8 pieces of plywood (all the side panels and storage panels) and all my tools, into the kitchen and took over. LOL. After about 5 hours, around 2000 staples and two blisters between my thumb and index finger, I managed to get all the panels wrapped with carpet. Check out the pics and let me know what you think.

Re: 1964 Alpex Bali Rebuild

So I just did a quick photoshoping of what the boat is going to generally look like once it gets painted. Unfortunatly that wont be till next spring. Take a look and let me know what you think.

Before

Like I said the rendering (crappy but you get the idea) is what it might look like after painting, things may change, though I cant get crazy with it as its such an old boat I dont want the paint scheme to clash with the boat itself. Give me some of your thoughts about it.

Thanks I really appreciate it. I decided to go with the carpet mainly because I have 4 kids and they will all be on the boat and I felt it would be better. Plus it was cheaper than anything else. Still got more to come so keep an eye out.

Re: 1964 Alpex Bali Rebuild

So Ive been stumbling around with the idea of installing a keel guard (http://www.iboats.com/Boat-Parts-Ac...94--keywords.keel gaurd--session_id.072791132) but Im not at all comfortable with the cost of them. I mean there is not much keel damage on my boat but since Ill be repainting it next spring, I would like some thing there to protect it. Now as I mentioned, I dont care for the prices of the keel guards. So Ive been thinking of different ways to make my own. Ive contemplated layering quite a few layers of fiberglass the entire length of the boat but that also will get pretty pricey, plus the thought of laying on my back on the cement didnt appeal to me either. I have also thought about getting a thin sheet of aluminum, cutting it in to wide strips and forming it around the keel and the length of the bottom of the boat but once again that too seems pricey. Now Im wandering if there is any real DIY way to make my own type of keel guard thats not gonna cost me an arm and a leg to make. Im the type of guy that likes to do things myself rather than buy it if I dont have to. So if any one has any helpful ideas or opinions let em know, Im open for any thoughts you may have on the subject.

Thanks guys
Cody

Thanks Tthomp3, It does look really good when the sun isnt shinning on it. The evening I put the carpet in it looked amazing. The next day was a nice sunny day and I realized that when the carpet gets warm it wrinkles really bad. Pretty upset about it. Still trying to figure out a way to remedy the problem that doesnt result in me having to pull it all up again. Time will tell. Yeah the Evinrude is pretty sweet looking, the pics dont do it justice though, that thing is huge. The previous owner said that it throws the boat around pretty good, so I cant wait to see it in action.

I like to beach the boat and want one too but yah they are spendy. Any dings from one season are a good reason to fix quickly and repaint next spring. Possibly the best option IMHO.

Not too sure if Ill ever beach my boat but hey, things happen. LOL But yeah there are some nice dings in it for years before from the previous owner and I just cant justify spending that much to buy one, not when I feel I can make something that will work just as good if not better for a fraction of the cost. I just have to figure out just what that will be thats all. *Thought processes working over time*

Re: 1964 Alpex Bali Rebuild

Well its been a while since Ive posted any updates... though there isnt anything to really update on other than the fact that Ive have been able to once again do some work on my boat. So I put a fuse block together and got it mounted and now its time to start getting the wiring done... only thing is, I know NOTHING!!! LOL about wiring a boat. I some maybe thinking that I should have taken pics before pulling the old out. Lets just put it this way, even if you took pics of a plate of spaghetti youd never be able to put that back together, thats what the wiring looked like, maybe worse. Fuse blocks, negative blocks, positive blocks, wires spliced, taped off, bare wires showing, multiple wires going to the same thing for no reason, it was just by sheer luck that this poor boat never caught fire. Im tired just thinking about it LOL. so hopefully I will have some pics up soon for you all to see.

Cody

Oh yeah, is there anyone on this site that lives near the Manitowoc Wisconsin area that may be willing to help with my wiring project??

Dash basic wiring diagram

Start w/ a fuse panel, available from iboats. Depending on the # of circuits you need.

jbcurt00, Thanks for the diagram. Three things, with my boat being a 1964, it didnt have a tach, temp or fuel gauge. Fuel is suction feed, never had a tach, and for the temp all it had was a light that would light up if it got too hot, which I dont know if it even worked. This will help for the most part, and do appriciate it. Thanks

Re: 1964 Alpex Bali Rebuild

Ok, so after strolling around the pages here, and looking at all of those out there that are ripping out the transom... I started to get that aching in my gut that I needed to go out and cut a couple inspection holes. And yeah Im sure some of you are saying," Well, that should have been one of the first things you did when you got the boat!" And YES... I KNOW!! LOL Now that I have inspected it, now I have to start the rip out process. So thats what I did. Ill be posting pics later tonight. Keep an eye out for them
