I use a rotary, keep it almost flat on the surface and go slow.

Ok, cool thanks. HB is having a huge parking lot sale this Friday-Sun so I'll grab one of those.

I think I found the stuff you're talking about Arch. Does 3m Finesse-it sound right? I just paid $25 at West Marine for it. OUCH

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

Buffed out the very bottom of the hull last night. It looks much better. I was afraid to burn it and probably could have done more but I'll get into a bit further on the visible sides after it's flipped.

So - planning for the next step with stringers and transom.

Stringers - I have read a bunch of threads and have a question. Do the stringers need to be completely covered in CSM before I bed them down? I was thinking of just coating them in poly, bed them in PL, tab them in using CSM first, then another tab of this 12" cloth tape I got (not sure of the weight I'll post pics tonight), and then capping them off with CSM.

Transom - Should I CSM the whole thing? Or can I just coat it with epoxy resin and tab it in using the cloth? Maybe CSM around the edges only? The reason i ask is that I slapped a little extra epoxy resin in a little section and was going to poly it in, but I'm not sure if the poly will stick to the small area where the epoxy is. (It's been a few weeks so it should be cured by now) Or maybe sand down the epoxy a little and POLY CSM.

Thanks fellaz. :)

Perfect, that's exactly what I was looking for thanks.

So I embarked on mission today. What has two thumbs and flips hulls by himself? This guy! Got a little dicey at times but I got it figured out.

I cut out a portion of one stringer. The wood was toast. Hopefully I can get a template out of some of the other sections.

Started smelling some glass fumes so I stopped. Need to replace my cartridges.

Oh yeah definitely! The weather delayed the hull progress by a couple of weeks so it's time to jam on it. The wife is out of town all of Saturday and the neighbors will be woken up bright and early with glass grindage. SORRY! I'm going to pull the boat out on to the driveway. I'm over this daily dusting crap. ;)

Hi Clown

Thought I pipe in on your project, that paint job looks Great! wish I had the weather to
work on my 67 Surfer. Here is a link to how I did the transom in my 1961 14' Elgin. It now
sports a 2009 50hp E-tec and tops out around 38mph on the GPS at 6000 ft
at sea lvl Ill probably push 40 to 50mph

Sorry Most of the fiberglassics links are now broken with no updatability.

Hey clown,

Get some depth measurements on your stringers. Also use some stringline from side to side so you can get some measurements for your deck replacement and your stringers. If you know the measurements for that fabricating the stringers is really not that hard to do regardless if you have old ones to use as a template or not.

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

Made some good progress today, and then took a step back. Got all the stringers out and the rear ground out. I was hammering a flat head digging out one of them and punched through the flippin' hull. :( It's an easy fix and nobody will see the patch underneath, but my repair list is long enough!! Oh well. It looks like the keel is shot and delaminating in the back. The stringers have a compound curve and I don't have the tools or the know how to make new ones. So I've decided to go with Seacast. If I end up having to dig out the keel, Seacast will be the easiest anyway so why not. Let me know what you guys think on the keel.

Here's where I punched through the hull.

Old stringers all came out in one piece..I just used my sawzall and bent a long metal blade and skimmed underneath.

Here you can see the compound curve.

I hit it hard for five hours and I'm spent. Gonna pop an Advil, grab some lunch, and work on sealing up the transom. Today is one of the nicest days we've had in awhile and I can't waste it. :)

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I got about half of what I wanted to get done and it started sprinkling. I was playing around with the keel and the wood is soaking wet...you can basically ring it out lol. The good thing is, the section I was messing with came right up so hopefully the rest is that easy. It's weird how big a project looks at first. As things are getting cleaned up, the "overwhelmingness" is starting to fade. ;)

Hey Clown,

Sucks about the hull!!!! Your keel stringer looks to be a challenge. What is the width and depth and length of it? I might have an idea of how to fabricate it if you can give me the measurements.

Hey Wood,

Yeah, I about pooped myself when I realized I punched through it. It is what it is. :) I'm not worried about the keel stringer but thanks. I'm going to do Mick's idea and use a railing. The regular stringers are the toughest issue. I'm going to copy Mick's entire under-deck work.

Looks like you've got the bulk of the hard stuff done... Demolition is never fun.

I am surprised that you didn't tackle the structural work before flipping and painting the hull- Don't sweat that hole, You'll be doing PLENTY more damage to that shiny new paint job before she's done!

Re: 1964 Arkansas Traveler Restoration

I was originally planning to leave the stringers which is why I did the hull first. But the more I read, the more I feel I need to do EVERYTHING. Another reason I didn't buff out the sides of the hull in case some scratches "appear." :)

I got started filling in the notches in the transom. Cut a couple pieces and glued them together using PL Premium. Tomorrow I'll sand them flush and get a coat of poly on it. Stupid rain...stupid stupid rain. :(

Damn this poly is smelly. I picked up some 1 1/2" foam for the stringer template along with some furring. I was going to chip away at it a little tonight but my garage is smoked out with fumes. Gonna hold off until tomorrow.

Got a layer of CSM on one side of the transom tonight. This poly is pretty easy to work with. We'll see how easy it gets come stringer time. ;)
