Hi all, I recently bought a 1964 Evinrude 9.5 Sporttwin shortshaft on CL, Mainly out of frustration with my 78 Johnson 6 not starting reliably (see my other post)

The last owner said he couldn't get it to start and he suspected the fuel pump. he also snapped the starter spring. I had an extra fuel pump from my Johnson 6 laying around, I slapped that on it and presto! it started right up first pull!

I was lucky that the recoil spring snapped where it did because i just bent some more of it straight and secured it back to the base through the set screw. So now its in running condition.

My question is, this has the old style idle jet linkage with two pieces, I was wondering if i can switch it out for the new style single piece idle jet on the 1966-later 9.5's see pic Courtesy of Leeroy. The linkage on this motor is all messed up.

Last question: How hot is too hot on these motors? I get a nice stream from the pee hole, but the heads still get decently hot! not so hot that they burn you immediately, I just don't want to melt the motor! I plan on doing the t-stat at some point soon.

Thanks All!

Get a cheap temp gun and check the temp at WOT. I think it should run at around 165*. Take it to the lake for an accurate reading. You should be able to switch the idle screws but may have to modify the cowling.

There were issues with the early carburetors on the 9.5 models.---Try and find a newer carburetor.-----There were issues with vibration at idle on the 64 and 65 models.---Does your motor have the " anti vibration kit " installed ?-----The 78 model 6 hp is just an excellent fishing motor.

What was the problem with the earlier carbs, besides this stupid idle jet linkage that moves about when it runs? I saw one on ebay from a 70 for $50.
As far as i can tell there's no vibration dampening kit installed, but I'm not 100% certain what I'm looking for.

I love the 78 6hp Johnson, but its a pain to start even though I've done everything I can think of to tune it up. It also doesn't get my 12' Gamefisher v-hull on plane. If I could get it to start reliably I will keep the 6hp and sell the 9.5, or vise-versa (depending on which one is more reliable and runs best).

The "vibration kit" that racerone is referring to was an OMC retrofit for 1964 & 1965 9? motors. Dad had one on his 1965 that he bought new and it made it very smooth running. The way to spot it is to look for 2 acorn nuts visible on each side of the motor (4 in total) on the vertical flat on the leg adjacent to the swivel bracket. See the figure below. The red Xs are where you would find the acorn nuts visible: early 9.5 vibration kit evidence.jpg
