My 90hp 64 Evinrude outboard starts and idles just fine. When I give her gas she won't accept the request and won't reach any high rpm level. One one occasion I ran it like this for about 10 minutes and out of nowhere it just took off as if there was possibly junk in the carb. When I tied up I ran all the fuel out of the engine in attemt to avoid this from happening again. I went out last weekend except this time it just continued to run at low speeds the whole time.
Items I've recently inspected and replaced are:
* Points & Condenser
* Ignition Wire Replaced and Checked for Proper Operation
* Plugs and wires
* Fuel Lines and Tanks
* Good Compression Check
* Tried Pumping "New" Primer Bulb While In Operation
* Tried New Fuel and Fuel Treatment to Clean out Carb

Could this be needle valve or float problems in the carb possibly?

If it is a carb problem, and it sounds like it is, repair parts are going to be a problem. Maybe someone on this board knows of a source. That carb was one of a kind. I doubt if you can get the carb apart without tearing a gasket. These may be hard to find. The last one of these carbs I did, The needle & seats were around $25, and there are 4 in this carb. You will also want a manual

From the johnson service manual ( 90hp 1964 )

No acceleration , idles good ...
A. Slow-speed needle set to lean
B. Dirt behind needles and seats
C. High-speed nozzle obstructed
D. Float level too low
E. Chocke partly closed
F. improper timing and synchronization
G. Fuel lines or passages obstructed
H. Fuel filter obstructed, fuel pump not supplying enough fuel
I. Not enough oil in gas
J. Breakerpoint improper gapped or dirty
K. Bent gearcase

One last thing ,does everything move like it shuld ? just remember that the first 3/4 of gas there is only the igniton thats moving . the carb opends on the last 1/4 of gas.

Thanks for the input. Does anyone know where to get aftermarket parts for this particular carb? I'd heard that they were expensive and difficult to even purchase.

It sounds like I may need needle valves (4) and gaskets ? Whatever it's going to take go remedy the problem. I'm a bit hesitant to rip into the carb without at least having replaceable gaskets.

My engine:
1964 90hp Evinrude 4 barrel carb

did the carb fix your problem? I found out my problem, it was the lower end not turning the main motor rod.
Now does anyone know what the wires are for?

i had a kinda like your my motor ideled fine but when i gave it gas it would only get up to 10 mph at 3000 rpms i pulled the plugs and i had good spark but when the plug was in the motor it wouldnt spark so it had me stumped for a while trying to figure it out what i did was had the motor running and then pulled one plug wire at a time to see if i got a change in the motor and when i got to that i plug i pulled it and i didnt get any difference so i knew it was that one. i didnt under stand while i was getting spark outside the motor but not inside. hopefully this will help
