I recently picked up an older runabout with a 1964 40HP Big Twin. Tank tested and and starts up / runs fine. Should be seeing any water discharge from the motor? I know they didn't have a true "tell tale" per say, but I'm not familiar with this particular motor and therefore not sure what to look for.

Thanks!

Should be water spraying/dribbling out the large hole on the back of the leg. Make sure lower unit is deep enough in the water - you should see a healthy spray.

Water should come out the exhaust relief behind the motor, below the lower shroud. There really isn't any tell tale on those motors. If you have issues with water pumping, one simple check is to remove the thermostat on top of the head and see how good water pumps up to it. It will be under the little wedge shaped cover on top of the head.

The motor will spit and then spray as it gets warmer and warmer, out of the rear exhaust port. At cold start up very little water, or none will be discharged from the rear exhaust port, until thermostat opens.
