1964 Evinrude Lark - Runs, but lousy

Well, I finally got this 40hp Lark out and running today, well sort of. It started very hard and won't idle worth a darn. I've replaced everything under the flywheel, and rebuilt the carb. I finally got it to keep running, but with a terrible lean sneeze. No matter where I set the low speed needle, I couldn't get rid of the lean sneeze. The only way I could keep the motor running at all was to open the needle 4.5 turns. I checked the spark plugs after all my efforts to smooth her out, and the bottom plug looks normal. The top plug was black with soot and very dry. Any ideas?

Well, assuming that the carb is OK, and the compression is good, and the spark is fine, then I'd start looking for an air leak or something off with the reed valves. Spray around with some WD40 or carb cleaner where you might have an air leak (carb base gasket, intake, vacuum cut out, fuel pump, etc.) and see if it rev's up at any one of those areas.

Carb doesn't sound "ok" Lindy. Same motor last year that we got running had a lean sneeze, adjustment on the needle got rid of it and it should with yours, sounds like its still an issue.

Sounds kinda like you still have debris in the low idle circuit.

Yea, typically, if the lean sneeze stays no matter what setting you have on your low speed needle, it's a pretty good sign the low speed circuit is clogged somehow.

You should be able to back that needle out and make it run rich.

As part of rebuild, I did remove the welch plug and run thin wire through all the holes in there. Even tried a different needle, and that didn't work. I'm thinking bad fuel pump now, as the plastic housing on th pump is cracked. Haven't had any luck finding a replacement so far. Apparently no one is making an aftermarket pump for that particular year. Not sure why?

had your exact problem with a 15hp evinrude,it was the fuel pump .you should be able to match it up with something or go to local evinrude dealer and they should be able to get one.plastic housing is cracked ,dont even waste your time looking for anything else, there,s your problem.
