Hi there boatman! I take it this is a 3hp we're talking about.

Do you have spark? You should be able to get at least a 3/8 inch spark between the wire up inside the sparkplug boot and anywhere metal on the engine when you pull-"start" the engine. Have you got anything like that?

Do you have a manual in hand? I'll tell you - it will really help! Your local library might have one to lend you. Check the Reference section.

Yeah, that's great. Just don't loose any! :)

If you've got good spark, you must have the timing at least close. I take it you've set the points to .020" already right? And you've got the spark plug leads on the right spark plugs right? (carb side coil runs the top cylinder)

That would leave compression and fuel. Did you ever do a compression test? That engine will run with readings less than 60psi. Although the reading itself isn't very meaningful.

That would leave fuel. You can squirt a little mixed fuel and gas down the carb's throat to see if it will fire. Use a spray bottle while someone else pulls the cord.

A pretty common problem with these engines is that the fuel filter clogs. Remove the little brass screw at the bottom of the bowl of the carb and make sure gas pours freely out. The filter is soldered to the top of the brass nut just above the spigot on the fuel tank.

Fire me an email and I'll send you some information about your engine tomorow evening.

paul.moir@ns.sympatico.ca

Parts manuals are available here.
But the repair manual is the one you want. The parts one has exploded views of everything and their part numbers. The repair manual tells you how to fix 'em.
