Re: 1964 Gale 60 by Johnson - quiet since 1984 -compression/punch

Thanks Joe! Lang's Outboards had a 10 x 9 1/4 in stock! He said it seems to be the most popular prop with this engine, so we'll give it a shot. Does the smaller hub essentially give more prop surface?

What are thoughts on the carb? My carb kit did not come with the little circular plugs, and a couple of those were leaking - used a dowel the same size to tap them down and that seems to have solved that leak, but it is still weaping from the orifice plugs and the intake manifold gasket - should I have use some sort of sealer?

Should I be worried about the compression? 65-70 on all cylinders.

I've never had a leaking core plug BUT tapping the dome portion with a proper size metal punch is the method I use to seal them. There is a substance named Gasoila that you can coat over the outside of the core plug if you wish.

That prop..... make sure that it has the smaller hub, and yes that feature does give more prop areas in a less diameter. The first time I used this type prop back in 1964 (I believe it was 1964), I was amazed at the difference (improvement) in performance.

:):):) Wow! got the new prop (it was the smaller hub) on Friday, and got it out today. What a difference! Hit 27+ by gps with 2 adults, 2 kids, labrador and 15 gallons of gas... Plus, got both kids up on two skis first try! Did not notice any slower hole-shot with the steeper pitch.

Still not getting the rpm's above about 4100, and a little sluggish, so I have to work that out. Any ideas anyone?

My carb kit did not come with replacement plugs... Tried setting it a bit more and punched through it. Had to replace with a home-made plug (.30-06 brass cut to size....) since none of the auto parts places have .25" plugs. Any suggestions?

Now for the floor.....................................................

If memory serves me correctly, the top full throttle, full spark advance on that model (1964) was only 4800 rpm, and if so, you're pretty close to the ballpark. Someone will jump in here and verify or correct that rpm statement.

I wanted to chime in that I just found this thread and found it immensely helpful. I just purchased my first powerboat, a 1961 Sea King with a 60hp Sea King/Gale/Johnson. I'm currently into the carburetor trying to troubleshoot a fuel leak.
