Hi, I recently aquired a 1964 Johnson 40 and a 1962 Johnson 6hp. My mechanic told me the 40hp needs a 20:1 mixture of gas to oil. That seems a little rich to me - is he right? What about the 6hp? The same mixture?

Both motors have been stored for 20+ years and will be ready for a test start soon.

Hope you all can help

Dave H.

David,

Both are 24:1.

Many folks on this board mix their older engines a little thinner-because of the modern oils.

I run a 1958 7 1/2 Evin. on a little under 40:1.

I always ran my old lark40 evinrude at 32:1.. never had a problem..

I figure that the oil that was around in the 60's can't hold a candle to whats around now...

and in the 60's they suggested 24:1 so using modern oils, the same effect (lubrication) should be achievable at much lower levels of oil.. I was never confident enough to move to 50:1 though.. in fact I have trouble doing that with my 72 model johnson, which was designed for 50:1..

regards

Frank

David

I bought a boat with a 1965 Johnson 40hp last year. Came with the service manual. A quick look did not reveal a specific ratio that is recommended. I'll have to look a bit deeper.

Are you familiar with this motor? I'm having some trouble with mine and not sure what to do. (see my post in engines forum) Good luck getting yours running.

Giddyup

Kramer

Most of us that run these old engines seem to like 32:1 with a GOOD QUALITY 2 cycle oil.

Thanks all for the advice. 32:1 it is. It makes sense to me.
Kramer: my small engine experience is in chainsaws. I have a feeling I'll get to know this motor pretty well after I get it back from my mechanic.

Good luck with it.
