1964 Johnson 75 Electric shift dies when place in forward or reverse

1964 Johnson 75 Electric shift dies when place in forward or reverse. Don't know if it's the "low idle speed adjustment" that needs adjusting or the wiring or something else. I do have the manual but do not know what the problem is. Don't want to take apart the lower unit until I know what the problem is. Please help.

idle has to be set with boat in the water, and in gear. sett idle higher than necessary, then fine tune it down, to where it will stay running.

How do I test the shift cables? I saw on another thread where it said to test the voltage by connecting jump wires to the green and blue wires. Do they mean to connect the green and blue wire to the battery? Does the engine needs to be running for the test? Below is another thread I found.

12V on Green wire is forward
12V on Blue wire is reverse
No voltage on either wire is neutral.
Voltage of both green and blue wires at the same time equals broken parts from going into both gears at once.

You check the voltages at the shift wires where they come up from the lower unit, toward the rear of the powerhead.

Also check the resistance of the coils and wires going down to the lower unit. Sometimes the cable burns in two and shorts the wires together.

I just drained the Type C lower unit gear oil. Does oil need to be filled prior to testing the shift wires? I assuming the engine is not suppose to be running for the test?

Unless you are having a shifting problem don't fool with it. The lower unit hasn't anything to do with your dying problem unless it seizing up somehow.

That's an electramatic shifter, which means that power can never be on the blue and green wire at the same time. If that happens it tries to go into fwd and reverse at the same time. That will stall the engine sometimes, until the lower end breaks....

I am having a hard time with putting Type C oil in the lower unit. Does any one have any advice on how to fill the oil in the lower unit or gear?

Get a $10 gear oil pump. It's a plunger type pump that screws on the top of the oil bottle and has a tube with a fitting to screw into the lower hole of the gear case. It's as easy as washing your hands.
