Right you are Lion Hunter, that's why I said clutch dogs, it's got a shear pin prop not a rubber one so how could it be spun and if the shear pin was broken it wouldn't go anywhere close 12 mph.

You are right BK, I was just commenting on the previous post about the hub. Evrytime that I had a pin break I could not move at all. I doubt that is his problem. More likely as you mentioned.

Check again, it's got a drive pin (not a shear pin) and a hubbed prop. At least the '66 and up do.

If the pin is stainless (drive pin) and not bronze (shear pin) you've got a hubbed prop.

Re: 1964 Johnson 9 1/2 help!!!!!!!

I am utterly confused. After reading wombats post I had to pull my prop on my 64 9.5. It has a steel drive pin and a hub insert that appears to be bronze or brass. Wombat, can this type of hub be spun or is it designed to break the pin?

If it is in fact a hub everyone I contradicted I apologize. I never considered the posibilty that the insert could spin.

You sir, have a hubbed prop.

The stainless drive pin is not supposed to fail if an object is struck. Rather, the hub is supposed to spin. This was not the case for the bronze shear pins and solid props. The steel drive pin IS, however weaker than the drive shaft. So it is a last line of defense before the drive shaft gets damaged should the prop not take the brunt of it.

wombat,
do you have any idea what holds the hub to the prop on these? Is there a rubber insert that cannot be seen?

kbait...my apologies, you were correct about having a hub.

Yes, there's a rubber hub in there. I had mine ('66) rehubbed a couple of years ago.

Iwombat is correct, and the rubber grommet usually fails before the drive pin. The drive pin fails more often if the propeller is loose on the propeller shaft.

My '64 Johnson 9.5 had one, which I had to replace after the wind blew me back into some rocks. My '56 15hp also had one, but that prop had been replaced by someone before I got the motor. And my '54 10hp also had one, that had been spun when I bought it. (Well, I didn't actually buy that one. I was buying a 13 ft. Feathercraft boat, and the guy threw the motor in to sweeten the deal.) I tried to fix that one myself, with dismal results.
