I have this outboard, the engine has been rebuilt. However I dont know if the electric shift works. Can I test the shifter by applying 12 volt curent to each lead, one at a time or does it need some relay?. I need parts for the controls, and dont want to put time and money into it if it wont shift. Is there any value in the rebuilt engine part?
Thank You

Yes, all you need is a battery. Connect the ground (- lead) to the engine frame, and the dark green one to + (12, red) and you should be in forward. Disconnect the green and connect the dark blue, and you should be in reverse. Connect the two with the engine running, and you blow the lower unit.
The gear solenoids draw less than 3 amps each, so there won't be any appriciable sparking.

Ok seems to go into gear with each wire. Should it be in nuetral when no voltage? I heard somewhere they are in forward with no power to help you get back to dock.

Good! Yes, it'll be in neutral with no wires connected/no power attached. This is a shortcome of the 'Selectric' shift system that you have. It was corrected in the later 'Hydro-Electric' shift system so that with no power you would be left in forward. I think you must be thinking of this later system.

As you probably know, it's possible for the Selectric shift system to slip at full thottle in gear & on the water and that there's no good way to know this without actually testing. But the fact that it's shifting confirms all the coils and wiring is working properly.

I didnt know that, Paul! Ok if it slips, what does it take to correct that? I got another queston also. Where is the selinoid suppose to be mounted? Also, I have two plugs one has two yellow wires the other red and blue. My controls just came have 3 wires for the shifter. I imagine the plugs are for ignition and cut off. Just guessing. I dont want to waste the money on a manual to find out I need a different motor.
Thanks again Paul!

Money spent on a manual is never wasted as long as it is a good manual. there is always ebay.

I'm afraid my knowlege of your outboard is limited to some general things. So I'm afraid I can't help you out with the ignition, etc. On the smaller engines the solenoid and regulator was usually mounted in the boat.
Firman57 has got it here. If you don't want to purchase a manual yet, borrow one from the library. Working without one, even on an engine you're not sure of, is an exercise in frustration.

The starter soliniod was mounted on the starboard side of the block below the starter. In 1964 the control box didn't have the ignition switch, it was seperately mounted on the dash, along with a HOT light and a choke switch. Sorry I can't find a wiring diagram. You will probably have to trace the wires back to the engine.

Thank You Jimmbo, Paul, fireman! I think I am going to get rid of it. It is a short shaft and though I did find a kit to convert it to long shaft 125 bucks, it just seems it's not worth it if the electric shifts are that bad. It was practicaly given to me. I will just have to save a little longer to get the motor I want. Thanks for your help everyone!
