Hello to everyone. I have just purchased a 35hp merc and it hasn't run for about 4 years. It turned over, so I flushed water through the flush hole and well I went for it. I put it in a tub fueled her up 2nd pull she fired. 3 pulls later she was running, a bit rough coughing and chuffing loudly. I noticed that there is not a tell tale? am I right or have I just missed where it is. I noticed on the head plate there is no pipe for the tell tale.

Also the coughing only happens at low revs, it is very loud and spits large amount of water out of the exhuaust port on the leg. Could it be back firing making it cough? Any ideas.

Tell tale ,aka. "pee hole" on right side of motor looking from the rear, could be blocked . Or possible bad impeller. As for the rough running it could be from sitting and possible gummed up fuel line and carb might try running a little sea foam in fuel, or rebuild carb

Thanks for getting back to me. I cant see anywhere on the body where the tell tale should be. On the engine water jackets covers there is not any hoses coming off them. I have a old 7.5hp merc and this has the pipe running from the top of the headend of the cover. It is like there is not a pipe for a tell tale. It is really strange as I thought all outbaords have one.

Flathead Mac, cheers for that I went into the shed turned it upside down and found it. It is only about 3mm. The professionals who serviced it last filled the hole with gasket seal, which was all around the base. No wonder I couldn't find it. CALEY MARINE Inverness serviced it last. What a company I wouldn't let them service a Lawnmower never mind a outboard.

Tomorrow job is take the carb to bits and clean it out.

El if you are going to take the carb apart, get a rebuild kit.
Why go thru all that ,without repacling all the gaskets. My .02.
Plus pump kit. Makes No Sense.
Plus water pump impellar.

Thanks for the advise I have got her running. It was coughing on tickover, but I run her on fast idle and sprayed maintainance spray up into the coils and she runs fine on tick over and fast idle.
She is peeing like a horse. I need to replace the HT leads and then give her a good run in the sea.
I paid ?100 for her as in the photo's, and the seller threw in the Mercontrols and cables. I think I got a bargin as I don't think it was used in the sea as there is no corrosion except a small amount of rust on the trim adjustment rod.
I have fallen for her, all the chrome I think I will restore her since she was built in 1964 she is 4 years older than me.

Mi Tickover is when the engine idles, and Maintainance spray is WD40, Duck Oil, in other words a thin spray oil which gets rid of moisture.
