I'm attempting to fix some leaks in the lower unit of my 1964 merc 6HP. Pulled the lower unit and the prop. How do I get into the inner workings? or do I need to? The leak appears to be there. Large notched ring with an on/off arrow makes me think with the correct tool, I can remove this ring and get to a another seal where the prop shaft connects to the gear box. I haven't had much luck finding diagrams on line. Do i need to buy the whole shop manual?

Here's how it is builtLower-Units0061.jpg first you should soak the perimeter of the nut with penetrating fluid and bend the tab on the locking ring, you need a spanner that engages the lock nut and turn it off. Maybe you should ask a dealer to unscrew the lock nut. The bearing carrier should be soaked with pen.oil too before trying to pull it out of the housing.

Looked through their whole menu and couldn't find anything that was earlier than 1965. MY s/n doesn't appear anywhere on their site either.

I am absolutely sure you will find your motor listed on --------mercruiser.com---------You just need a wee bit of patience to get the results.-------Your motor was referred to as a 60 model and 6 HP, look under the 60 model here.----They list parts for the 1950 models , so yours is listed as well !!

Re: 1964 merc lower unit

The s/n range for the 1964 model Merc 60 is:

6 60 2-cyl 1607513 thru 1745520 1964 USA

Therefore if yours fall in that range, here is the parts list for s/ns 1408611 thru 1916138:

60 H.P. - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

The shop manual you would require is P/N 90-25500.

In the interim, here is a link to the condensed version of the Clymer manual. Download it soonest to your computer as the link is short lived:

MERCURY - MERC 60 AND 110.: Small Engine Repair Reference Center Home

Re: 1964 merc lower unit

I have a s/n 1737317 on a 6 HP, 1964 merc. For the life of me, I can't locate anything on mercruiserparts.com that matches that combination. Everything comes up 60 hp, no earlier than 1965

Well, if your s/n is as posted the information in post #9 is applicable to your engine.
