I just bought my first boat and am picking it up tomorrow. It has a Johnson 60 on it and I took it for a short spin and got it to plane but it lacks power. It starts and idles well but it sounds like the high speed jets may be an issue, not sure until I get it into my own lake. Also the rope steering is kinda wonky and the speedometer doesn't work. The shifter/throttle controls are wonky too. There are these little black thumbscrew adjusters on the control head but I have to learn about them yet. I live in Toronto, but our lake is near Kingston Ontario. I would welcome any tips.

Thank-you all, great looking forum!

Re: 1964 Penn Yan 16' Fibreglass

Welcome! She looks great for a 46 year old... better than most. A fine little ship.

How do you plan to use her? Ski, fish, or just cruise the lake? At the heart, a 60 hp on a 16' is going to limit your hole shot and top end. It's just not a fast setup. Plus the hull design is not cutting edge, though I bet she cuts a fine wake.

If the motor isn't performing at 100%, maybe a carb rebuild is just the ticket. You might be right on the money doubting the high speed jets.

You might also consider looking at the prop.

Good luck!
