Well I would think I have confirmed a seizure. I took the intake bypass covers off and found a broken piston between rings on #2 and scoring on #1, #2 and #4. Why it happened? I still don't know but I think it's time to pull the power head off my spare Starflite.

Oh Crap! Those look narly. Will the cylinder walls be okay? Sometimes, you can get by with scored pistons and clean the cylinder walls, but there are times when things break and take out the walls too. I've seen some pretty bad ones, when some needle bearings came loose and ripped pistons and cylinder walls to shreds. OUCH!!

It looks like in your case, you may have aluminum from the pistons, stuck to the cylinder walls. If so, then that can be scraped off and re-honed.

If you do happen to rebuild this jewel, then I would suggest running the oil at 24:1, for the first few hours of use and let her seat together nicely, and then go to 32:1 during the first year. A lot of people say that these motors can run on 50:1, but I wouldn't suggest it on anything older than 1974. The newer ones, had a different alloy in the pistons, which allowed it. Eventhough JohnyRudes 10hp and above are fully jeweled, their pistons are a softer alloy and can score easily, if they get hot, or have too little oil.

It's not real necessary to run the gas out on an engine that size, because you're not going to detach it and lay it on it's back. Just drain the carb at the end of the year and you'll be fine.
