Hi all. I am in the process of stripping the paint on my aluminum hull and it has dawned on me that the paint could be lead based. Does anyone know if lead was used in the marine paint industry in the early 60's? Of course I have thought about this after the port side, transom, and the hull below the water line are done:facepalm: Any information on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

That's a heck of a good question, luv2fish. I never gave it a thought and never saw anyone say anything about lead paint. A lot of us here are making lots of paint dust. Anyone know?

I use to chew on the base boards back then.
Just don't eat it and you will be alright.
Wear a mask when grinding, you should be ok

Yes, Lead was used in white until the '70's when the the industry went to Titainum Dioxide (TIo2)......lead is still used in red, yellow and orange but is used less everyday and mostly used by lower budget paint companies. there are also heavy metals such as Chromium and Nickel used in paints still today so protect accordingly.

Thanks as always for the inputs. The hull was painted white and I have been weating a half mask respirator and safety glasses so I feel ok about that. Now I just need to work on the clean up of all the dust in the garage and outside on the ground.

Another exposure is ingestion..... Having the dust on your hands when you eat, dust settling on your beverage cans then drinking, dust on your cloths then co-mingling in the wash, dust on cigs. And, if there are kids around!!!! Be very careful...

Yes, it is totally possible. One day I had a XRF analyzer home with me from work, and I shot my 79 Sea Ray (in sig). The yellow paint on the hull was pretty hot, like 5.0 mg/cm2. So just be careful when grinding and use wet methods to keep the dust down. Also, if you have dust in your garage, make sure you clean it up using wet methods. Spray it down, just don't sweep it up, because you are just moving the dust around. Also, if you are grinding on them metal with paint, you can vaporize the lead, which can be a respiratory issue. Just be smart and use a respirator (not a dust mask) with p-100 cartridges and you should be fine.
