I'm getting no spark on my motor. I removed flywheel to expose ignition sytem. Question is, is there more to the ignition sytem than what I see there. I see condensors, points. Is there a coil located somewhere else. Also was wondering if I'm checking for spark the right way. I'm just pulling the rope and putting a screwdriver in the plugwire across the block. Is there certain things that have to be done to get spark (ie throttle open, or any thing else) really need help this is the last problem I need to solve on this motor, and I'm in the dark.

Check to see that the coils are not cracked.split or leaking (arcing to the stator plate). Clean and reset points to 0.20. Set throtle control to start, retest for spark.

fishunter15,

I do not believe that engine has a kill switch. If it does have one, it would be on the front of the lower cowl.

If you remove or replace the coils, heres what to look for. If you look a the laminated heels of the coils, they set flush with the casting boss on the magneto plate, they have a small amount of in, and out adjustment. If they are set out to far they will be struck by the magnets in the flywheel, to far in could result in a weak spark. OMC makes a ring guage for this adjustment. You don't need that, just be sure they are flush.Notice also how the lead's on the condensers are tucked down, put them back the same way. Don't let them stand up in a loop or the flywheel will grab them, and really raise havoc. This engine will have spark no matter what the throttle position.

Fishhunter,
Lift the coils out and do a good visual check on them. I had coil failure on my old 6hp. The insulation was all fractured on the underside of the coils, looked ok on top but... :( Water had got into the laminations from the underside and shorted 1 coil dead and its mate was very close to the same disease.
2 new coils and it runs sweet as again. Just be careful with all the terminals as previously mentioned to clear everything under the flywheel.

Good luck

Peter

Finally, don't forget to tighten that flywheel up to 43 ft/lbs, or you'll only get spark for a short time. :) Of course, you can test your spark without torquing down the flywheel; just don't run it that way.
Those particulair coils were used from the early 50's through to the '70s. Replacements can be found at NAPA autoparts, and various places online as part #18-5181. Of course, your local Johnny/Rude dealer should be able to fix you up with the OEM coil, PN 584477. The aftermarket ones can be found online for around $15.00 each.

As noted, be sure "Surface A" and "Surface B" are flush with each other. If your coils are cracked, they should be replaced. :D

Re: 1965 5hp rude

thanks for all the help guys, one more question though. What would the proper way to check spark with flywheel off the motor be. After I replace coils I'll need to do this. Will just turning it by hand generate enough to produce a spark, or is there another method I should use

You cannot do it, as far as I know.

The magnets in the flywheel are part of the spark generating formula.

With the spark plugs out, and a bit of oil in each cylinder, spin the flywheel nut with a drill that has a socket chucked in it. Of course the flywheel will need to be set in place, since the magnet is in it. The second best bet is to wrap a length of rope around the flywheel (it will accomodate) and pull that. It's hard to properly check your spark while trying to spin the flywheel with the palm of your hand.

Good luck!

Xcusme: Great picture!

Hi Fishhunte
Get yourself a couple of alligator clips. Attach a piece tie wire or other bendable wire to each. Wrap the wires around the spark plugs at the threads to form loops. Hook the clips to a good ground(the block) and put the plugs in the loops. You should be able to place the spark plugs in any position that is convient for you to see. Replace the flywheel and gently seat with your hand. Then just spin with your finger tips. If all is well you will feel and hear no rubbing. You will also get a bright blue spark and hear the snaping sound of the arc. I never spin anything I just put together useing power until I have proven all is well by hand first. Once you have proven your ignition system, don't forget to install the flywheel nut to the specified torque value.

thanks alot I'll try Pretty much everything out. I made the mistake of trying w/out flywheel on, I didn't even know that there were magnets on it. Guess that is am important part of the equation :D

Now I'm gonna get this beast running
