So I took the 6 HP all apart, replaced the impeller, put the gear case housing back on , all shifts fine ------ until I put the powerhead on. With the powerhead on I can't shift into forward ---- the upper shift cam hits on the front of the powerhead-----and must be out of alignment now???? I have no idea how that might have happened and I cant find a picture of what it is supposed to look like ------ I never disassembled in the first place! Any thoughts????

Re: 1965 6Hp Shift Mystery

What are you referring to as the "upper shift cam"?

You have not provided an engine s/n but if you are sure it is a 1965, here is the parts list:

MERC 60 - Mercury, Mercruiser, Force, etc. Parts Lookup

See both GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE

When you assembled the LU to the leg did you set it up as:

From the manual

Before attaching gearcase housing to the
driveshaft housing, make certain that both
the shift cam (7) and the shift lever (on
starboard side of motor) are in forward gear
position. Shift shaft (5) should be in counterclockwise
position (viewed, from top end of
shaft) and shift lever should be pulled up.

Hey Gerry - thanks for your time ------ biggest problem is I'm an idiot ------ I put the lower unit together correctly ----- problem was I had to change the factory fuel line from the pump to the fuel connector ------ and I did that with 2 brass fittings and conventional fuel line ----- with the powerhead off -------- and when it put it back on the linkage at the shifter was hitting my new fuel pump fitting ------- I was far too focused on my impeller replacement -------an hour of screwing around and 20 seconds to re-adjust the fuel pump location --------
