Hi guys, I am picking up a 1965 9.5 hp Evinrude for free this weekend. It has not been run in a little under 2 years. Also, he said it had a minor gas leak. I am thinking I need to rebuild the carburetor, check the points, and replace the water pump. Anything I am overlooking?

Sounds good. Check the lower unit oil for water and if it looks good change it. If it has a milky appearence you will need to find the leak.

You may want to get an OEM Factory Service Manual if you're going to do this work yourself. Stay away from Seloc or Clymer. They Suck !!

I always do a compression check when I buy an outboard. I might still buy it, but it makes the price a lot more negotiable if you find a cylinder with lower compression.

You pretty much named everything to do. I would replace the fuel lines or inspect them. If its the original fuel line, its probably cracked and leaking.

Seeing as this is a freebee, then just do the maintenance and you should have a great little motor. There's also a sticky under the engine and maintenance section about bringing a sleeping outboard back to life. Good read!

This motor looks beautiful! What manual do I need? Also, the main fuel line was leaking and I am going to replace that. Do y'all think the carburetor needs to be rebuilt? Thanks.

Before you rebuild anything, see how it runs. If it was put away properly it should be fine, although I would replace that impeller.

Alright, so the fuel line I need is the fuel connector to pump one. The part number is #310994. It is unavailable. My question is, can I use the same fuel connector to pump hose from a different year model? Are they compatible?

You should be able to by it at your local auto parts store, take the old hose with you to match up size and lenth.

Thanks, the replacement part is now 36" long. Would I be able to cut this down and make it work?

Don't see why not, it's just a fuel line from the connector to the fuel pump.

Sounds good! He said it was running perfect when he put it up, the fuel line was the only reason he put it up.

On a lot of those older motors where the fuel lines are NLA I just replace the fittings and use a length of hose and clamps.

I have a spark on both plugs and I pulled both of the fuel lines awaiting a trip to Autozone to get replacements hopefully. Once i replace these hoses, should I try to fire it up? I know the impeller may be out, but I want to try to see it run atleast a little bit before I replace it. I probly wont run it very long if it is not pumping water.
