i have an 1965 evenrude sport four 60 hp i started it up for the first time today. it started first pull (don't have the electric starter hooked up yet) i ran it for about 2 mins on a really rich oil/fuel ratio seems how the motor had not been run in so long shut it down started it back up ran it for about one min and it died. so then i pulled the plugs and they were covered in oil cleaned them up put them back in and added some straight gas to the mix to thin out the oil some, now it starts will run for about 30 seconds and dies. i started checking spark and it always has spark on all cyl but sometimes the spark is weak. you can crank it over a couple times and it will be a really really hot spark where you can ark it like 1 inch and then sometimes its just a small spark is all you can get.

well anywhaz i have to go out of town for tonight and tomorrow night if some of you could give me some things to check as soon as i get back it would be realy appriciated.

Your test tank must be an oily mess. A WOT run on the water would do it good.

i started with somthing like 1/3 of a qt to about 2 gallons of gas to make sure everything got lubed up really well. iv sense added about a nother two-3 gallons of gas still runs Smokey but nothing like it was. im probably gonna use up most of this mix then start over with a good measured mixture after the motor has been run a bit. i just got back home i plan on taking it out on the watter in the morning we will see how it goes.

Use a mixture of 50/1 in that engine as it is designed for it. Bearings exist on all moving parts.

1 pint of TCW-III 50/1 oil to 6 gallons of gasoline. A octane rating of 87 will be fine. Don't be guessing about the mixture.

Re: 1965 evenrude 60hp

thank you, for that info, i perpously made the mix with way to much oil just i used a bit more than i should have apearntly. i got the mix right started with a fresh tank and ran it on the watter for about 2 hours wot a few times ran great, doesnt like to go into reverse but the shift linkage might be off a bit after the watter pump install. i checked the lower unit oil after i got back and it was milky. so i drained it then i took the prop off took the four screws off behind the prop removed the plate and inspected the shaft seal witch apeared to be good, although a couple of the o-rings were questionable so i replaced all the o rings sprayed out the lower unit with carb cleaner as best as i could let it sit and drain every last bit that i could get out. re assembled and put in new gear oil. hoping to take it out for another run tommorrow hopefully there will be no more watter in the lower unit. if there is im going try to find a seal kit and replace them.
