+1 you can get new points and coils right here at iboats. for about $20 each. I've never had a problem with the Sierra products, but if you're worried you can spring for the OEM. Thankfully, the replacement parts of either brand are much better quality than original and will last for ages. Here are some handy links for putting it all back together again.

Got the parts Monday and put them on today, new coils, new points, and new condensers, hooked all up and gave it a try i now have a great spark on both wires, My question is how do i set or check the timing on this motor before i put it all back together..

Thanks again to all.

The main source of timing is having the points set at 0.020"gap. That will get you 99.9% of the way. The other way is to put a multimeter on each point (remove the coil and condenser wires) and check electrical continuity of each. Slowly turn the points cam until the point just opens (continuity is lost) and stop turning the cam. Now position the flywheel on the key and verify if the mark on the flywheel is between the timing marks on the armature plate. This I do by eye.

Those timing marks are the ultimate timing measurement, but I have found that everytime I do it on an OMC motor and then check the points gap, the gap is always at 0.020". So now, I tend to just set the gap at 0.020" and leave it at that.

The other adjustment in spark timing is the link and sync with your carburetor. The throttle cam that pushes on the carburetor's roller must be set so that the timing is advanced properly over all RPM ranges. On most of my motors, there is an arrow or line on that cam that must be in the center of the roller when the roller just touches the cam (when the carburetor throttle just starts to open). Unfortuneately, I am not familiar enough with your motor to be sure, but I suspect it probably is adjusted the same way with two hex nuts that allow the cam to be pushed more forward or back depending on what adjustment needs to be done. In any event, look at it. It is probably already adjusted just fine. If it is, it sounds like you are ready for the water.

jmo....a timing fixture is the absolute easiest way to set it up to be 100% perfect. F_R makes/sells them....and they are truely a piece of art in your tool box.

Buddy, In the videos that I posted shows how to set the timing with a feeler gauge. Use the feeler gauge to gap the points to 0.020 inch. But you must have already done that because you stated that you have good blue spark on both wires. Just torque the flywheel nut to 40 foot pounds. Crank her up!!

It doesn't matter. What that is saying is do not torque under 40 or over 45.
