My 90S will not start, it turns over but no spark. the coil has 12 volts to the 2 leads coming out of it but nothing to the plugs. I dont want to start replacing everything and it still wont start so does anyone know what I can do to fix the problem?

Thanks
Mike

does that year have the battery ignition with the distributor under the flywheel. If so check the breaker points and condensors under the distributorcap. also check the rotor and cap.

No the distributor is behind the flywheel. So you think I should replace the points and condensor?

check them to make sure they open and close. Look for burnt marks on the contacts. the least you should do it clean them and reset them. That is what makes and breaks to give you timed spark to your plugs.

172525
TUNE-UP KIT
Contains (2) 590290 breakers
(1) 580256 condenser
(1) 580338 rotor

You got the same ignitions that I got on my 90hp , and you shuld have 12 Volts ( more like 10 volts ) ONLY on the + connector on the coil .
The other connector ( marked - )shuld be the wire from the distributor .

But some questions from me :
Do you got the original coil ?
What color do you have on the wire connected to the + connector on the coil ? ( shuld be a white with single red stripe ( spesial resitor wire )

If this resistor wire is replaced , you might have a burned coil .......
But if you got a resistor i series with the new wire you might be ok ....

Get it working :
Follow Blueclaw's advice , replace points and condensor , adjust the points to .020 .
Sheck the wire from the points ( goes from the pionts out tru the distributor, ends on the - connector on the coil )
If you got a bad fealing about the coil .... replace it with a car coil ( with resistor ).

good luck

It is the original coil, but when it stopped running it had all of the original wiring but alot of the wires were cracked and losing there coating so I replaced all the wires. but I did not know anything about that special resistor wire. I did try a Coil off of my 67 VW not sure if is a resistor type or not how can you tell?

Some coils does use a internal resistor but most of them got an external resistor in serie with the power wire ( +12 V wire )( white ceramic "box" ,size 2" x 1/2" x 1/2" )

I am using a standard coil from Bosch ( VW uses Bosch too )on my engine with an external resitor in series with the 12V .

My VW coil does not have one of those white resistors and it still would not start with that coil on there. So I am going to try to find somewhere that has the Tune Up Kit. not sure where I am going to find that.

Here is a picture of my coil , resistor = 1.8 ohm .

You could try some simple tests :
Points:
After cleaning and adjusting the points ( .020 )connect a lightbulb ( low watt ) between the output from the distributor and +12 volt , remove the plugs and turn the enginge by hand .
The light shuld turn on / off when turnig the flywheel ( bulb getting ground when the points closes )

Coil :
Remove ALL ( except +12 volt ) wires from the coil , find a good sparkplug + 1 plugwire , connect the plugwire dirctely on the coil output , to trigger the spark connect a wire from the - connector on the coil > hold to groung on the engine > when lifting the wire you shuld get a spark on the plug ( hold the plug to the groung too ) repeet connecting/disconnecting to make more sparks .
BEWARE HIGH VOLTAGE

Might not making a very strong spark ,but you shuld see IF the coil IS working ( to make a stronger spark > connect the capasitor between - on the coil and ground on the engine )
