I've got a really clean '65 5 horse sea king that needs to have the pull start cord replaced, and I'd like to get a manual for this motor. The only place I've found one was from iboats and the owner's manual is $37 and the service manual is $65. That's a bit too much for me so if anyone knew where I could download one or get one for say $20 that would be much appreciated. Thanks!

You can normally find them on Ebay. If you find them being sold by Searayman or Searayman13 (can't remember) you can't go wrong. I've bought a few off him with no problems. The owners manual is not necessary to have. It is the factory service manual for your year and HP. you need. Best of luck.

Get the right manual. outboardbooks.com, if you can't find the exact right one elsewhere. And don't waste your money on a third party manual (Seloc, Clymer, etc.)

Aside from the manual, could somebody please give me the part # for a new pull cord and impeller? Thanks, -Tucker

outboardbooks.com also has parts lists available.

You're right, they've got the parts catalog for sale for like $22. What I'm asking is if someone has the catalog or access to one and could give me a few part #'s for like $22 less than that.

Antique outboard will usually help you out with part catalogs. See link below. Also, you can ask if that '66 OEM repair manual (you saw on ebay) is comparable to yours. $10 sounds like a good deal to me.

Re: 1965 johnson 5hp help; need manual

Thanks for the links guys... Ok here's the deal with this motor, I got it from my brother and apparently about 2-3 years ago him and his buddy were using it duck hunting and his buddy broke the cord while trying to start it. It has not been started since and the motor appears to be locked up. I can't turn the flywheel and can actually remove the nut and tighten it without it spinning. I don't know much about outboards but I do intend to learn and order that manual tomorrow. Any quick ideas on what could be locking this up? Thanks, -Tucker

Just a guess ... wasn't fogged before storage and rings are rusted to cylinder walls.

Remove spark plugs and put a bunch of ATF in each hole w/ spark plugs holes facing up. Let sit for a few days and see if it frees up.

Re: 1965 johnson 5hp help; need manual

Thank you wilde1j for the advice. I put some oil in it yesterday morning and let it sit, tried to turn the flywheel today and it broke free. I'm going to do a compression test this afternoon, but will be unable to start the engine to get it warm. Will this affect the reading? Also, what psi should I expect to get? Thanks, -Tucker

Compression test cold is fine ... not critical to get it warmed up, just a slightly higher reading on the pressure gauge.

Check for spark with a needle gap spark tester set at 3/8"

Haven't checked for spark yet but with both spark plugs out while doing the test I got 45 psi from each cylinder. Does that sound right or is that a bit low?

That's a little low. Did you keep pulling it over until the gauge wouldn't read any higher? Generally, you want to see more like 60 psig for pull start motors, but each motor is different.

Yes, I kept turning the motor over until it maxed out. I tried with the throttle at idle and wide open.

I ordered that manual off ebay a few days ago, so now I'm just playing the waiting game. I plan to clean up the carb and put a new pull cord on her and see if I can't get her to start.

Keep soaking the cylinders with some type of penetrant while you're waiting on the manual. I use PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench, but there are many others.
Here's a hint to save your arms: chuck up a socket for the flywheel nut onto your electric drill and spin it that way. The motor rotates clockwise.....and do keep the lower end submerged in a trash can of water when spinning it; the water pump impeller needs to have water to keep from burning up.

Re: 1965 johnson 5hp help; need manual

Thanks for the tip whaler. Well I got the spring wound 15 turns and then the spring made a noise and I lost the tension. Took it out and it didn't look too good. Does it look like it can be fixed by a machine shop or lawnmower shop? Or am I gonna have to shell out the $80 for a new one?
