As ezeke suggests, it ain't gear oil. It's oil that you put in the gas that has gone through the engine and done it's job. It then goes out the exhaust...into the barrel (or lake).

Two-stroke engines only use the oil once. It is then partially burned (smoke) or dumped.

I am pretty sure that it's gear oil. When I pulled the lower unit plug about a 1/2oz of water came first then the milky white gear oil.

A common cause of water intrusion is from reusing the drain/filler plug seals. Replace those and see if your problem goes away. Or, you can pressure test the LU and find out for sure.

Ok so I put the impeller back in upside down and flipped the legs the opposite way and all is well. Spits water like crazy. The only reason for using the old impeller is because fishing opener is this weekend and I don't want to wait for the new one to arrive. I think my problem was not having the water high enough in the barrel as well. Thanks everbody.

Not a good idea. You can get the right impeller at any Johnson/Evinrude dealer. They all have them in stock. Or, drop by a large NAPA parts house. They'll probably have one, too. It's not a rare item.

Yes, fishing opener is just about here. You may not enjoy it if you are on the lake when that old impeller loses a blade and clogs the water line. No fun.

I tried Napa and they did not have one or the guy on the other end of the line did not know what he was looking up. None of the dealers around me have one either so that's why I decided to just reuse the old one for now.

How does one go about pressure testing the lower unit? Does anyone know off hand what thread the drain plug is? Thanks

Where are you in MN? Do you have the OMC part number for that impeller? I find it hard to believe that a local dealer doesn't have the part. Some dealers just can't be bothered to look stuff up. They may have the part, but won't take the time to look up the part number.

I don't have a 9.5, so I don't know, but I've never had that kind of problem, even with outboards back even earlier than that.

I've had good luck at Nelson Marine in White Bear. They always seem to take the time to look up the right part.

With all the boats and motors in MN, it's hard to believe you can't find a simple impeller. The part number is 377178, changed to 775519. The NAPA/Sierra Marine number is 18-3003.

Don't forget, our host here at iboats sells Sierra Marine also.

Use Sierra Kit # 18-2682 for 9.5 gearcases prior to 1968.

I have the new Sierra seal kit and impeller and now I forgot which way the seals go in the impeller housing and the prop shaft support? Does the concave go up or down? Thanks
