What gear oil do I need to put in the lower unit. At wide open throttle the engine is trying to go then it is like it is bogging down back and forth between the two. I have not check the compression yet. Just got the carburetor rebuild. Have not ran it with the carburetor rebuild yet. That is the only thing I could think it would have been. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Neal

A twin cylinder outboard that runs at half speed is 99% safe bet that it is running on one cylinder. Yours is cutting in and out on one cylinder. You should have been fixing the ignition, not the carburetor. Points, condensers, coils, wires, spark plugs, etc. Or, a possibility of water getting in the cylinder.

any 80w-90w gear oil if your lower unit doesn't leak at all. Yours probably does so I'd use the same in marine grade. You can even go to walmart and look in the sporting goods section and get the marine gear lube they sell there. It might be wise to replace the 50cent washers on your drain plugs since they're only supposed to be used once. I've used 'em more than once but I hear they're prime spots to leak.
Good luck, and listen to F-R, he's somewhat knowledgeable about these things.;) Actually, he's forgotten more than we'll ever know about an outboard.
