I have recently gotten a 1965 Johnson Super Sea Horse 60hp Model VXL-11C. It starts and idles very good. I think it is running rich at the high throttle though. Very smokey like it is rich. How do I adjust the high speed? How can I tell if it is right? Should the old motor be really smokey for a two stroke? Also, can anyone show me where the drain is for the lower unit oil, check level and fill are? What is the proper procedure for checking the lower unit oil? Thanks?

You have a fixed high speed orifice, no adjustment, see pages 10 & 11, item #93.

Those engines always smoked if you are using the proper oil ratio, no fix for it.
You drain it from the lower screw, #54, remove the vent screw #74, to allow all the oil to drain out. Refill it from the bottom screw until it comes out the top screw. Make sur to install new seal washers, #83.
See pages 20/21 to see your lower unit.

When I run the motor in a barrel, I seem to get oil in the water. Not sure if the oil is from the lower unit or not, but it almost smells like 2stroke mix. Maybe it could be collecting in the barrel from the exhaust? I did check the lower unit oil and it looks milky. How good are these motors? Would the motor be worth putting money into it to get working right? I do know of a few mid 80's Merc 50hp motors and a a mid 70's 70hp Evinrude or a 1993 70hp Evinrude for sale. Would I be better off pursuing one of these newer motors? How were those 70hp Evinrudes from the early 90's? Thanks

Oil in the water is probably fuel mixture coming out of the exhaust, common for that vintage engine. Milkey oil in the lower unit means you are getting water in the lower unit, nedds to be checked and probably resealed. Those engines were real fuel pigs, smoked alot and were heavy. The 70hp engines, with normal maintaince were pretty bullet proof in my opinion.
