I just purchased a boat has what looks to be a 60hp 1965 Johnson super sea-horse engine that was last ran in 2011, what should I do prior to starting it and would a Gayle of the same year have interchangeable parts.

I am by NO means an expert on outboards.. (Just got mine a year ago.. )

But, with your description (Older engine, not run in 6 years), I think I'd be doing:

1) Compression Test (Post results here)
2) Spark test with open air gap tester (Post results here)
3) Replace water pump impellor
4) Drain and refill lower gear oil
5) Rebuild carb(s)

I'd start with 1 and 2. Then if those checked out, on to 3, 4 and 5.

I'm quite sure the experts here will give better advice, but I think that's a minimum of what you should be looking at (And expecting) to do..
I have no idea about interchangeable parts with a Gayle.. (Sorry.. )

For what it's worth..

Gale stopped production with the 1963 model year. But then Evinrude and Johnson continued it with the same basic motor.

Yes, the Gale 60 became the Johnson / Evinrude 60 for 1964. Checking the service manual it appears that the fixed high speed jets were added after 1965. Check out your model number carefully when ordering parts. It will be either a VX, VXL, VXH or VXHL followed by a number. The L denotes long shaft, the H denotes high speed gearcase. The number 10 is for the 1st year model of a given model (in the case of the Johnson 60, 1964, 11 = 1965, 12 is for 1967.) That motor does have an automotive type distributor & battery ignition.
