Nice project there Dabbler! Welcome to the tin boat brotherhood!

Good looking project, and nice thoughts on paint schemes.....I kinda like the awe inspired 70's van look! If not completed already I'm voting for #3 by the way.

I will be following along....lots of great help here on the forum!

Hey Frey,

I kinda like it too. Those vans were kickass. And, #3 is pretty much the only horse running at this point. I'm going to give the Twain it's swan song until the Jupiter is ready for power, gauges, controls & trim, and then take it down and scavenge its carcass like a hyena.

GUTTED (except for those @#$%&&%# cleats)

New deck (1/2" ext ply) dry fitted:

Chief Quality Control Officer approves:

Couple awful gashes on the gunnels where the splashwell attaches

Looks like PO took a can opener to it:

Looks like I've got a bit of repair to do.

Next steps:

Leak test
Flip & strip
Seal deck pieces
Fabricate & seal transom (I've got an idea to mod the transom)
Paint outer hull
Flip
Gluvit
Interior (many steps here.....)

Whoa that poor little Jup got used a whole lot with a rotten transom and decking to cause all that damage. Does the SW have corresponding damage too?

No, the splashwell is fine. I really don't think this is damage from running. It looks to me more like someone back in the chain of possession got sick of not being able to access under the gunnels and just bent stuff out of the way and ended up creating the crack.

It definitely looks like someone cut into the AL on the gunnels and peeled them back, right under the vent holes. I'm guessing to access fasteners.

Also did a quick sand on the inner transom skin. Lots of pitting & corrosion, but all superficial. Nothing even close to penetrating.

That gunnel destruction is a first I've seen, what sort of uni-brow type does that?

Yeah the transom skin looks pretty standard for pitting alright. Clean it, skin it, sand it, prime and paint it and it'll last for another 50.

Thinking about widening the "horns" of the transom, to support decking over the sides of the splashwell.

The vision:

Leak test went well -- only had drips from the "chin" of the keel (not sure what to call that -- where the keel meets the bows; the part that hits the beach first) and just below the bilge drain in the stern. Maybe 1 drop every 2-3 sec in both places. Nothing else. Still going to do the full gluvit treatment, but that's a good sign going forward.

Some progress: stripped the sky blue paint off the gunnel hardware

Going to leave them bare dull AL

Hey your moving onto decking. That's my favorite transition from the tear down, repair and clean up to rebuilding. :encouragement:

POs put a LOT of holes in the transom. At least 3 different locations for tie-down eye on the port side, plus 2 grab handles and speedo pitot. I'm thinking about doubling up one of the 4 through-bolts lined up vertically on each side for tie-down eyes.

Have any of you deleted grab handles and wished you hadn't? I'm going to have a kicker bracket on 1 side and a swim platform on the other.

If it was mine I'd delete the grab handles and just have transom eyes.

Progress: filled (JB weld) and painted the pitted inside of transom skin, side panels soaking in spar varnish

There's another step forward, having a good and solid transom skin is very much worth the effort. :encouragement:
