Hi all, I am new here. I have a new project that may be interesting, a 1965 Starcraft Mustang. When I got it the price seemed OK, $450. It came with two 6 gallon gas tanks, an anchor, a fishing lure, and a couple of old beer cans! All I think I need to do is polish it, get the motor running, get the bikini top and the seats redone. Sorry about the bad pictures, I took them at night.

Welcome to iboats.

The boat looks good.

The trailer has me confused. Looks like it has 2 couplers?

roscoe, that's the why they used to make tilt trailers, one stays connected the other comes off and then it tilts. Wild huh?

Yeah, the trailer had me confused to for a while. I thought about it and figured it out. For my sailboat the trailer is a nicer tilt trailer.

How is the transom and floors? Any soft spots or signs of rot?

No, it all seems to be good. Just a bunch of leaves and bird feathers. The transom is good too.

She's lit up! I ran the engine earlier. It runs pretty good. I also cleaned off the "carpet"

Looking good. However, you need a much deeper test tank for the motor. You want the water level to be filled up to about 1-2 inches below the main exhaust port. The water will get pretty dirty, but that's perfectly normal. That ol' Big Twin is gonna make that little boat fly!

Thank's. I can't find a deep enough tank so I will just take it to the lake. If it doesn't work I'll have my little Johnson 4.

yeah, it can be tricky finding a big enough "test tank". You can see why they came up with muffs. I eventually found a big old trash can and it seems to work well enough, but it's always kinda messy :/ All part of the "charm" of these old 2-strokes.

Are there any colors you would suggest painting the top?

:thumb: on getting her running. Have you had her on the lake yet? Reason I ask is if you have strong sun, the topsides can get almost as hot as the sun. Light colors work best on the topsides.

Not yet! Probably next week, I can't find ads to know what stock colors it came in.

Re: 1965 Starcraft Mustang

I took it to the lake yesterday, the motor ran better than last time! Water was actually circulated through to cool it. Took on some water from the drain plug  but we didn't sink. I learned that you need a battery to shift into forward or reverse. Thus the model "Electramatic." The top will be "fiesta yellow." Armor All helped the panels alot. I repainted the Starcraft emblems.
