Re: 1966 100 hp evinrude impeller change
My buddy and I are trying to repair a 1966 evinrude. We believe its the impeller causes us issues. On a recent fishing trip the hot light came on, and the motor siezed up. Since then we have been able to get the motor to turn over and run. Now the problem seems to be there is no water pumping thru the unit. If anyone could point us in the right direction on how to replace this impeller or even step by step instructions and how to do this that would be great. We are both mechanically inclined but are new to boat motors. So any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated. Thank you...
I'll try, but remember it has been over 30 years since I've done one.
First you have to disconnect the shift wires at the rear of the powerhead. Slide the rubber sleeves back and undo the knife connectors.
Next, I think you have to remove the lower outer covers to free up the shift cable.
Remove the diamond-shaped cover plate from the side of the midsection. Then feed the shift cable out through the hole. You will see another cover plate inside that the cable comes out of. Remove the screws from that cover, oil up the cable, and pull the cover plate off the cable. Tie a string to the cable to aid in reassembly
Remove the six nuts and two bolts holding the gearcase and extension housing to the midsection. The gearcase and extension will now be free to be lowered and removed. Don't pull the string out--that is to pull the cable back up through when you put it back.
Remove the extension from the gearcase, then the water pump.
When you put it back, oil up the water tube grommets, and smear some grease on the drive shaft splines. Oil the ridges on the shift cable. Make sure the o-ring is good and in place on the splines. Make sure the rubber grommets are in good shape on both ends of the extension tube. It won't run with the hood on if they are left out.
