Bought this nice little merc knowing of the problem. The original prop was spun. Came with a later 8 spline LU that doesn't fit. Guy I bought from bought the later model LU and tried to put it on. Didn't fit, got frustrated and bought a new 4 stroke out board.

The shifter shaft seems to be the problem. It is longer by half an inch.

So do I look for a 6 spline prop? Try to redneck engineer a fix for the original prop? Try to figure out how to fit the newer LU to the older Motor?

Motor is good. 120psi both cylinders. Starts easy and runs well.

Newer shift shaft.

Original shift shaft.

Both sitting on trash container. (seemed comical)

The LU for the motor can be fixed if the prop is spun, by just replacing the prop. If the gears are bad then they will need to be replaced. The clutch dog is prone to ware more than the gears and can be replaced fairly easy with the right tools. The newer LU will not work on your motor, and can be resold. The old prop can be rebuilt or new one bought to replace it. Your motor should take the LU setting closest to the hinge of the garbage can if the motor is a 1966 and the other LU is for the newer motors made. What is the serial number of the motor? It will be on a plate between the transom bracket screws.

I was lead to believe the older props can not be rebuilt as no one makes new hubs. The 66 unit is 1990632 or there close. Going off memory.
You have the LU backwards I think. Closer to the hinge is the newer 8 spline.
Wondering if I could just shorten the newer spline? Have lathe can modify.
Other thing I'm thinking. Turn new rubber isolation piece and repress into hub. Going to talk with peers in engineering rocket parts that turn rubber isolators. Maybe able to rebuild this hub. Unless someone found a parts source somewhere?

That SR# dose come back as a 1966 motor. The LU for the motor should be the one that has the prop on it in the photo. If you take the rubber off of the prop drive shaft and take it and the old prop to a prop repair shop, they ca put a new rubber center in it and repair the prop blades. The job is fairly simple and new rubber hubs can be bought from the prop rebuilder but is best for them to do the replacement. JMO

I have read the prop hub kits are no longer available for these older 6 spline shafts. Did someone start making them again?

Th prop repair shops have knowledge of manufactures of prop hub replacement units. Just because one manufacture list them as NLA dose not mean that another manufacture is not making replacements. If you check at oldmercs.com, and seawaymarine.com you will have a good chance of finding a replacement prop or hub kit to replace what you now have. JMO

Hey thanks! Seaway marine shows one in stock. Had not been able to find one.
