Hello,
I just got this 66 whaler and I would like to fix the bottom. It has scraped the trailer and the blue filler foam is showing with some water dripping. How can I fix the center keel and side keels Use marine filler ? Also, It was repainted with expoxy paint of some kind about 0.5mm thick and it is peeling & chipping off all over revealing the beautiful gel coat underneath. Can I heat the paint to remove it? Sanding would most likely ruin the gelcoat !
Thanks for any Ideas.

Howdy, Extreme.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Not a big problem, but do not use filler.

First, let her drain until the foam is dry. If there is foam missing fill it in with canned foam.

Sand the areas around the breaks and feather them to a fine edge. Build the areas back up with 5 to 7 layers of glass and epoxy.

When cured sand that to match the original contours.

You can sand all the paint off and re-gelcoat any areas that you have sanded through or you can just sand it off and repaint. Being a BW fanatic, I would probably re-gelcoat, but that is a LOT of work for little gain in cosmetics.

I had a 13 with that problem and the above worked well for me. Good luck. :)

Thanks JB,
That sounds easy enough. I am kinda worried abouth that water freezing this winter and exploding the glass. Will the water ever dry out completely once the foam is soaked? Water probably comes in from srew holes on deck. Anyway I love it , it is so stable.
Thanks again
