ok so I had the head off to do a head gasket. the top piston seems to have a fair bit of pitting .I'm thinking it may be runing lean a bit.
the damage could have been done along time ago or since I have had it not sure first time with head off.

the manual I have said the high speed is factory set and no need to worry the low speed is on the peg that sticks out of the carb . I can turn it some more but that is just low speed

I do troll with this motor a bit so could it be working hard at low speed causing the ping

i mix at 40:1 should I change that

really don't want to blow it up

The 40:1 mix will not hurt your motor. The 1966 is for all practical purposes the same as a 1963 motor which was a 24:1 motor.
What spark plugs are you using?
What is the compression?

the motor seems to be working ok but I don't want it to blow up and if it's still detonating it will put hole in piston
