Hi i have a 1966 9.5hp Evinrude outbord motor that has been given to me a year ago by my grandfather who past away. The motor ran fine and i bought a new gastank for it and everything last year, were i cleaned the motor and draned for the winter. This year i put it back on the 14' syvan boat to use it, when a couple problems occured, when i start it i have to hold the throdel to the left as hard as a can or it will shut off and resently iv had a problem where when i am going full throdel and the boat hydro planes like it usaly does, it gets to the peak were it was just about to and then makes a sound as if a belt or chain fell of as it is still in motion it imeadly slowed down the engein will still move at slower speeds untill i put it at full throdel were it will do the same thing. could you please sugest what is wrong and what i should do to fix it.

If fuel is leaking at either fuel connector (fuel tank to engine hose connectors), that would allow the fuel pump to draw air.

If no fuel leaks exist, suspect that the carburetor is slightly fouled. If so, it would need to be removed and cleaned.

However, before digging into the carburetor..... when this problem takes place, pump the fuel primer bulb (acting as a manual fuel pump). If this cures the problem, suspect that the fuel pump is failing.

Gas comes out of what? The carburetor? Float is stuck. Probably gummed up from storage.
