I just acquired my first boat & came across this great forum & had some questions. Excuse my teminalogy on certain things, but I am still in the learning process. The boat has a few "hairline" cracks in the hull underwater, including a larger one that I am including in the attached picture. As you will notice in the picture, it appears that the previous owner put some silicone(?) caulking over it. There is also a few larger nicks out of the hull as well. I would like to make a few repairs to the boat.
The question that I have is, what is the easiest & inexpensive way to repair both the crack & the nick for a novice like me? Thanks for the help!

What little is visable in yer picture, I'd guess Marine-tex might be the answer...

I did a little research on the Marine-Tex epoxy putty & I think it should work. Any good posts out there that has a repair being done with pictures??

Hello lazy7 .. and welcome to Iboats :) ..

Hmm..that pic looks kinda fishy.

It kinda looks like wet core leaching out from the crack.

You say that picture was taken on the bottom ? ..

Yes, picture was taken from the bottom. Would a repair with epoxy & glass cloth be better?? Thanks

No need for the epoxy..poly and mat should do fine ( Thats what I would use..not filler ).
I would not deem that a "hair line" crack ;) .

I was just wondering why its all brownish stain looking ( like bad/wet wood was under your crack ) .

I would explore to make sure your not covering up something that needs addressing before you repair.

Any recomendations on what kind & where to get this "poly & mat" from??
I will have to tear into it a little more to do some further investigating.....

Aye..polyester and CSM .

You will probably find polyester and mat from the same place you would have aquired your epoxy and glass cloth..

Epoxy/sealant applications?

Epoxy/sealant applications?

I have have been looking over the posts on repairs here & I am about cross-eyed. I am not looking at doing any one specific repair, but was just curious if there was a general "rule-of-thumb" on when you use each of the following for a specific repair: epoxy putty?? 3m 4200?? 3m 5200??

Re: Epoxy/sealant applications?

No reason to do an epoxy repair on a boat that does not require wood to glass bonds.. poly will work fine..

There is no "rule of thumb" for materials ( generally I use mat and 1708 ..sometimes woven roving ) fillers are only for fairing when I build up with glass and still have the cure time involved with cabosil/resin as I do with mat.

I dont fair with bondo..or other " fairing compounds " its raw glass..or gelcoat for pre-fair..then gel or spot prime..

There is no 4200 or 5200 in repairs..

Got some more pics ? ..

Can I get some links to some places to find this poly & mat to do the repair? Thanks for the help Yacht Dr. & everybody! This is my first time, so would like to make sure I get the right materials to do the job correctly.

Where R U Located? You COULD call a local body shop or marina and see where they get their fiberglass supplies locally. They will have a polyester resin and fiberglass mat supplier I'm sure.
