I have a 1966 evinrude 100hp. when i try to start it with the key the starter or flywheel seems to bind up and stop it from turning over also i am constantly having to wiggle or move the throttle lever while turning the key to get the starter to engage. But if i hook the starter up straight to the battery it will turn over and start with no problems. I know there is a neutral safety switch could that be the problem? If so do you know where it is located? Also, if so is there a way to by pass it? Or am I completely heading in the wrong direction on this one? Thats been known to happen..often. Thanks

Yes it does help. But we did try to disconnect those wires from the shifter one at a time and both at the same time still no change. Whats the chances that the neutral safety switch is on the distributor? If so would you know how to by pass it? Thanks for your help.. and yes it is what they call selectric shift.

You might check your timing. If it is too advanced, the motor will stop cranking, each time the cylinder fires.

The boat starts and runs fine if you use the pull chord. Its just when you try to use the starter with the key it seems like its binding unless you hook the battery cable straight to the starter.. then it also turns over and runs fine.
