I would like to have a charging system run off of my 1966 Evinrude 60HP motor (Model 60653R). This year and model had an optional generator accessory, and my motor already has the mount for the generator. I have searched but I cannot seem to find an OEM or aftermarket generator. If anyone knows where I can find a functioning generator that would be very helpful.

As an alternative I was wondering if it would be possible to install a third party alternator instead of a generator. My thought was that if I got the belt and pulley that was originally meant for the generator then I could install the pulley on the alternator and custom make a mount that would put the correct tension on the belt. Has anyone ever done this before? What concerns would you have with doing this?

Please see this post for reference as this person has the exact same engine as I do: https://forums.iboats.com/threads/b...ging-sysyem-for-my-1966-evinrude-60hp.388762/

Just bumping this topic. I am not sure if that is allowed, if not I can delete this post. I would really appreciate any information even if it is from someone who has put an alternator on a different type of engine that was originally built for a generator.

There are no replies because this path generally isn't gone down. The engine itself runs a magneto and can be pull started. Battery not required to get you home. I think there were 2 charging systems used on that vintage. One under the flywheel and then the other was a side mounted generator. Both were optional I think.

The only 'modern' thing you could do is run a 7SI ( Mini Delco ) MARINE alternator. They do exist, but a cheapie is over $100. You can't buy the $50 forklift alternator. That can be installed as a one wire but you will need to run a wire to the battery as there is no wiring in the cowl that I'd trust with 70A

The 1967 model 60 and 80 hp models had battery powered ignition.----Had windings under the flywheel to charge a battery.----A 67 model donor motor to get the bits might not be easy to find.----Would need the flywheel as well. and upper bearing housing I think.------Lot of work.

As an inexpensive alternative, you can get a solar trickle charger which will keep the battery charged if it's left out in the sun. I had a pontoon with a 1957 Lark and I never had to charge the battery all summer long. I'm using a similar charger on my 1959 Crestliner voyager with a '59 Lark. Unless you use a lot of accessories, a trickle charger will work fine.

^^agree. Use a deep cycle battery with a lot of storage capacity. Supplement charging with a trickle charger at your home (if trailered) or at the dock if slipped. You should have not problem -- go to a two-battery system if you run a bunch of hungry electronics.
