I just bought my first boat and am ecstatic! Problem is that it is my first boat and I?m not sure what I need to do before taking it out on the water for trial runs. It is a 14? Lone Star Semi-V aluminum boat with a 1966 Evinrude Sportwin 9.5 hp engine. I mixed up the gas and oil, put it in the tank, and it fired on the first pull! It seemes to idle fine at high and low throttle. The only wierd thing I noticed was that after running for a very short time, less than a minute, the cooling water coming out of the engine was HOT. Should it be hot that fast? I really want to take it out to our lake and see how well it runs through the water, but I?m not sure if I should do anything to the engine first. I?ve been told to possibly change out the gear grease, but I am unsure how to do this or even where to even start with that. I know I need to buy a repair manual, and can on this site, but I'm itching to get it out before I would have time to get one. Its getting cold here already, and I know my days are numbered. Any help and or advice anyone can give me would be greately apprectiated!

The water coming out should be relatively hot for the first minute or so until the thermostat opens, then it should cool down to a "very warm" temp. If it doesn't cool down in the first two or three minutes, shut it down and replace the thermostat located on the back of the engine above the plugs. A triangular cover with 3 bolts. You'll need a thermostat, a cover gasket, and the rubber seal that fits on the thermostat. As for changing the gear grease, look at the gear case, you'll see two slotted screw heads (fairly large), one way down near the bottom and the other up just under the cavitation plate. Take a small pan to catch the old oil and remove both screws to drain it out. Don't take out the Phillips head screw! Re-fill with OMC gear oil (it may need Type C oil but I'm not positive. There may be a sticker inside the cowl that mentions the type of oil, if no sticker, use regular OMC gear oil) by sticking the tube nozzle into the lower screw hole and squeeze until it starts coming out the upper screw hole. Hold the tube in the lower hole while replacing the upper screw. Remove the tube and quickly put the lower screw back in. Be sure to use new screw seals (nylon washers) on both screws.

Will it matter if I use Type C if it does not need it? You said to use standard if I was not sure, but would it matter the other way around?
