1966 Evinrude Tachometer HELP

I have a 1966 Evinrude Motor #40673B. I need a tachometer for it, I got a 12 pole Teleflex tachomter and it did not work. I have AC volts coming out of the generator and the generator shows dc amps on the ampmeter. Is this the right Tach? I hooked the sender wire to both of the out generator wires and nothing. Do I need a differnet pole Tach ? Please Help Thanks Carl.

i dont know if u can acually set up a tach on that older motor
