1966 Fisherman...about to toss in the towell!

Last my "new" inherited 1966 Fisherman began to lose power. I rebuilt the carb (without a new float)and replaced the points and plugs which made it run great...temporarily. At the end of last season, it began losing power again. Yesterday I put it in and it ran the same. I've rebuilt the carb (this time with a new float)and again replaced the plugs and points. It still runs like a slug when I try to take off. The only way to get it to run at all is to run it with the choke half on and then it runs with low power. I have checked and I'm getting power to both plugs. I'm not sure what to try next. Could it be failing coils? Do they usually wear down or just stop working? I'm to the point of just selling it as "needs repair". In the last year I've bought a manual, two sets of points and plugs, and two carb rebuild kits. I feel I'm throwing money away. If anyone has been through this, I'd appreciate advice. I'm pretty tired of stabbing in the dark.

D_Wilson
Frustrated in Ontario

Howdy, D_Wilson.

The choke is your best clue. You have fuel starvation.

Overhaul your carb, and do it by the book. Also check the fuel supply from fuel tank vent all the way to the carb inlet. No restrictions and no air leaks allowed.

Good luck. :)

I have fuel to the carb...pours freely when I pump the line. Now I did try running the motor with the line disconnected. It ran better until I reconnected the line, at which time I had to choke it to keep it running. While the motor was running I sprayed a bit of carb and choke cleaner and it picked the rpm way up too. Did I mention the motor runs much worse when in gear?

Are all these things synonymous with fuel starvation?

Thanks

Hi
Ditto what JB said.

Did you set the new float level OK when you fitted it?

might be you have a small pin hole somewhere and it is getting air from some source. Is the bulb and gas line old I had one that had a small hole in it and the motor did not run hardly at all.

Thanks for all your suggestions. I rebuilt the carb again...checked all, same problem. I'm going to bite the bullet and sell it. It's been headaches since I got it.

it runs better when you dissconnect the fuel line? if so check the fuel pump. if the pump diaphram is bad it will flood a cyl and not keep the fuel bowl full. the pump kits are cheap but its about the hardest pump out to reassemble :) :) . small arse parts :) . the tiny boost spring likes to fall sideways and will cut a new diaphram. so it sounds like you have one cyl flooding and another running lean.

Okay, I did take off the fuel (filter or pump?). The diaphragm looks shot. I looked for another on iboats, but there is no listing for a 6hp 1966 Evinrude. Any ideas where I could purchase a new one?

Go over to the local John/Rude dealer and get fuel pump repair kit 393088. That will work.
