Just joined but have been reading threads for weeks. This site is AWSOME! Hope im not asking an already asked question. Im repairing a friends first boat. He has a 1966 houseboat powered with a 1966 merc GM 110. He overheated last year BAD from a worn waterpump in outdrive. Engine still has compression and starts. I have oudrive removed for normal rebuild of bellows and pump. No biggi except its my first and taking time. Oh yea gimble bearing is seized. Big problem the exaust manifold in boat that is supossed to have a small rubber boot to connect to elbow that goes to transom is not there. It seems last owner removed this entire two parts and installed a boot that goes from exaust manifold elbow down into bilge and out transom. Or better yet its connected to transom with a clamp. If I had to guess its clamped to whats left of a rusted out elbow. Its hard to tell with engine in way. THIS all melted. What do I do? Remove engine? To see if correct elbow can be installed? It seems engine needed to be removed anyway to do this rig job they did so why wouldnt they have installed a metal elbow like should be there or is this 2.5 to 3 foot rubber mess an aftermarket thing made by someone. Is cutting a hole in back of boat and putting exaust out that another solution with flapper so we dont sink. I never removed and engine and if running exaust a different route is possable I would like to.
