I'm glad to here you've got it running well - thanks for the feedback. I'm also glad you're installing a new impeller and carb kit - it's a good engine; it deserves the attention. :)

Re: 1966 JOHNSON 3 HP WON'T REV UP

Now I have a new problem. First of all the carb kit etc made it run like a top for the first tank of gas and impeller works fine. then I refilled it inadvertently with old gas and it crapped out. Wouldnt go full throttle etc ran rough. I then dumped the gas cleaned out the tank cleaned the carb again and now a new problem has developed. No matter how much I clean the carb I get white stuff show up on the high speed nozzle. I have cleaned the carb and gas tank numerous times and still this white stuff shows up on the nozzle after running in the tank for a few minutes. It looks a little like weak milk and kind of jelly in consistency. Almost the consistency of oil. Someone has suggested that it may be water mixed with the oil. I dont know how water would get into the carb. It runs fast and slow but not smooth like it is capable of. If I could only get rid of this white stuff Im sure it would run good again. I even tried high test gas, carb cleaners but to no avail nothing seems to work. The gas is fresh etc.
Hope someone has an idea whats wrong, because it sure ran good for that first tank of gas just like a dream I even caught a few fish.
Thanks Doug.

Sounds like your old gas had a bit of water in it.
I would take the tank off of your motor and thoroughly clean it out.

I have cleaned the tank thoroughly and put in new fresh mixed gas but still get this stuff on the nozzle as mentioned. I have looked at the reed valves and they look ok. I cant figure out where this stuff is coming from, the carb is clean, gas tank clean it sure is a mistery. I put some injector cleaner in the tank to see if that works perhaps that has some sort of adverse effect on the oil in the gas I dont know. Will try gas without the injector stuff in, and see what that does.

RUNS LIKE A TOP AGAIN. I guess I didnt clean that carb as thoroughly as I thought, there was a little water still sitting in one of those ports and a little air blew it out. Now things are back to normal. Good lesson dont save your old gas. thanks again to all
Doug

I am thankful to this wonderful forum and all the people, who have contributed in this thread. Specially Rear Admiral Paul Moir. It was his guidance which was already available, that made my work of restoring the Johnson JH21E very easy. It would have taken real long before learning about the boss gasket as the carb of my engine did not have any such thing. I started my engine today, looks satisfactory to me. I got this engine from an old engine shop two weeks back. Hope it will go fine with my 8' pram. Syed

Welcome to Iboats, Syed. I'm glad we could help. :)
Lahore: that is about the furthest off 3hp I've ever heard of. I hope it gives you good service.
I was very saddened to hear of the catastrophy that has befallen your countrymen. I know it was far North of you but still I hope you and your family are well.

Good luck.

Hello, Paul. I highly appreciate your kind words for the catastrophe we are undergoing. The quake jolts lasted a short time but effects will be felt for many years to come. We, at Lahore were not affected directly.
3hp is starting fine without prop; do you think starting will be ok with prop? It will take me a couple of weeks before performing the test on boat. I think it will be a bit different with load.
Regards, Syed.

Re: 1966 JOHNSON 3 HP WON'T REV UP

I have this same motor (model JW21E, not sure about the year though) and I can't get it running stable. I've cleaned the carburator and I'm going to go through the exhaust relief holes next. Two questions remain: (1) the motor now has a pair of random spark plugs does anybody now what type it should have? (2) What is the name / code of the tune-up kit with new carb float (and water pump impeller)? Mine has the old cork float and following the instructions here I'm planning to replace that next.

Thanks for any help!
