i need to know something. on this model engine i have it has electric Shift switch which is in the controls box. Now the controls box didn't come with one so i need to buy one but there are $400 just for that one part. Now i am thinking can i buy a 3 way switch instead, and put it in the dash. So when i switch "up" it goes to Forward and applies 12+ to one wire and when i switch "down" in goes in reverse and applys 12+ to the other wire and when the switch it in the middle i am in neutral and no power is being applied to either of the wires.
What do you think?
Also the engine is a
1966 Johnson "Super Sea-Horse" Electramatic. Model # RK 28

I'm not real familiar with the elec,I dont see why it wouldn't work,I do have a question, are you sure of the wiring one wire with current for F gear the other for R?????Seems to me I read no wires charged is F.Not sure tho just making sure you have the right wires for the correct gears. Have you done a search here for the wireing??? If not you should HOPE I am proven wrong but it will make sure for you.
Heres a sentence I found doing a search,

yuo need 12 volts on the green wire when in neutral and 12 volts on both the green and blue wires when in reverse. No voltage on either wire when in forward.

That would be for hydro-electric shift. Electramatic is 12 volts to green is forward, 12 volts to blue is reverse, and no voltage is neutral.

i have a 1966 evinrude 80 hp electric shift that i have not used in 10 years and when the switch in control box went bad i put a 3 way switch in the dash and it worked just fine. just make sure it can carry at least 10 amps to be safe and i would put a fuse in the feed wire.

I did the same thing years ago and it worked good. I used a toggle switch but if you can find a rocker it would be much better.

If you could find a flip cover it would be even better. What was neglected to be told to you was that with a toggle it will be real easy to accidentally go from full throttle forward to full throttle reverse with a careless bump of the elbow. At least with the push buttons you actually had to mash them pretty hard to get them to shift.

Re: 1966 Johnson Electric Shift Question????? All help welcome

I have a 71 model 50 hp with electric shift.

The previous owner wired in a 3-way switch just as you are describing. It works great. I have owned the boat for 9 years and have used it continuously every summer. I don't know how he did the wiring, but the wires go from the switch into the control box. The control box still operates the throttle like any other boat, but the gearcase is engaged by the three way switch.

With that said, be aware that if you successfully wire in a switch you are always at risk of putting your boat into gear at too high of an rpm, or accidentally bumping the switch into reverse as you're going down the lake. Either scenario could destroy your lower unit or maybe your entire outboard. I am always extremely careful to only move the switch at an absolute idle so that it goes into gear as it would with a normally operating control box.

Good luck!

yes BUT itd be easy to bump.... id go with a rocker type switch if it were me and like previously mentioned a rocker with a flip top cover would be even better
like this... im sure you can find one with a cover or buy a separate cover or you could make a surround for it, something that sticks up as high as the top of the switch and goes all the way around it im probably over thinking it, but stuff (little kids fingers, a wayward backside, an unexpected jolt) happens ya know? like mentioned before you DO NOT wanna shift it on accident from full throttle forward to full reverse
