1966 Johnson fd-20c SHIFT LEVER PROBLEM

This past weekend something broke on my shift lever problem is I don't know what. The lever is now very sloppy and will not stay in gear. I can still get it in gear if I play with it but it will fall into neutral if I try to leave it alone. Where is the lock mechanism or lock located to hold it in gear.

Vertical flat interlock bar on starboard side of the powerhead. Pivots in the middle, spring at top end.
