1966 "merc 350" 35hp mercontrol question

Ill try to make this as understandable as possible so bear with me. So on the control box i have 2 levers, the big gear selector/accecerator lever and a smaller black lever that seems to do with the accelerator also. When i start the motor up the black lever is all the way forward. When i shift into forward it automaticly starts to push the black lever backwards as i give it gas, but it will not go all the way back. I cannot get full throttle out of it untill i push the black lever all the way backward. When i go to slow down, i pull the shifter backward toward neutral the motor will go below idle and shut off. I have to slow down to where i think the motor is at about idle speed (still in forward gear), then bring the black lever back to the forward position. Then i can put the shifter back into neutral without the motor cutting off. It just seems like this is a little complicated to have to do all this. Any ideas?

The black lever is for cold starting in neutral only - when the engine is running the lever should be folded down flat, then you shift gears.

So i guess im using the black lever to make it idle instead of the carb making it idle? maybe ill check the idle screw on the carb.

If everything is rigged and set properly you should only need to use the small black lever on the start up of a cold engine only, once warmed up everything works with the big lever.

ok its something wrong. i took the control box apart and i dont see how i can move the warm up lever without it shifting into gear. when i put the two halves back together the black lever has to be in the position that its in in the pics. With it all together if i try to force the black lever down it trys to move the shifter. Now on the inside, the brass roller on the warm up lever rides in the groove on the cam, the cam can only go onto the thing that the shift lever connects to one way because it has a groove that its sits in. Since this is the case how would i be able to give it gas (with the warm up lever) in neutral without shifting into gear? any ideas?

Nice pics, first off you may want to get a schematic on a parts breakdown and make sure everything is there, there may be a binding issue on the mating parts, the cam parts don't look to bad to me, and someone didn't go overboard with the grease, make sure the grease is not like a road tar substance as this will also cause problems.

The detent pin is missing (you may have removed it already)

All I have is a paper schematic but you may be able to find a previous post with the parts breakdown.

I concur - everything looks kosher in there. Not sure why it's acting up on you - one of those cases where if it were in front of me, I could probably figure it out, but pics ain't doing it...

I've been looking at the manual and you must assemle the control with the black lever down and the throttle lever at TDC. You don't have the shift and throttle cables mixed-up at the motor do you?
