1966 merc 95 ss

Started in driveway fine,(muffs on) first turn of the key in months fired right up! ran it for a few minutes while checking things like water from peehole etc.

My starting technique is usually to prime bulb till firm, lift throttle lever about half way, hold down choke and turn key in 5 second bursts. In the driveway it started on first turn after 3 seconds and ran at a nice comfortable idle.

The next day I took it to local marina, launched it and then tried to start it, didnt start. After 5 turns of the key i decided to invesigate.

I removed the cowling and when pumping the primer bulb i noticed gas shoot out of the carbs then trickle down inside of the motor.

I tilted the motor up and a few teaspoons of fuel ran out of each carb.

Is it carb rebuilding time?

Or should i be looking elsewhere? what about liguid fire? should i try shooting some of that in the carbs? I had about a dozen lookie loos standing on the peir above me offering a range of suggestions from bigger hammer to squirts of liquid fire.

Maybe it was just flooded or somehow knew it was back in the water and didnt like getting its leg wet?

sounds like float needle is stuck open, thats why you didn;t have to prime the first time, pressure from the tank filled the carbs.. yes its time for a carb job. never ever use ether, starting fluid, liquid fire on a 2 stroke engine, it burns 2 hot, and has no oil. easiest way to burn a hole in a piston.

while the carbs are off make sure the fuel lines arent dry rotted as well!

Okay i pulled the carbs (after removing the half the motor parts) i took them apart and wow!
What a mess, varnish and crud balls everywhere, suprised it ran at all!

I cleaned them up, and other than lots of crud they were in remarkably good shape for 40 year old units!
I also dropped the leg and tonight i am going to change the leg oil and put in a new water pump kit!

I should have it in the water this weekend for another try, i will keep you posted
